Okay, here we are: the quarterfinals are here, and now it’s time to start biting your fingernails.
If you’re USA or Russia, that started last Saturday, but now every game played is in full competition for a medal, and on the ice there is no shortage of desire to wear the medal as these players represent their countries.
Thus far, I sincerely hope that most of the games—both losses and victories—shutouts and blowouts, haven’t come as much of a surprise to you in the end, but it’s that time to start making your picks and final predictions before the elimination rounds begin tomorrow.
Here are the quarterfinal games happening tomorrow:
Sweden vs. Slovenia – 3:00 a.m. EST
Finland vs. Russia – 7:30 a.m. EST
Canada vs. Latvia – 12:00 p.m. EST
United States vs. Czech Republic – 12:00 p.m. EST
All teams that you see on the right side of these match ups had a bit of pressure on them today, as they all played qualifier games to try and find a spot in the elimination rounds.
The Czech Republic, with scoring threats such as David Krejci and Jaromir Jagr, defeated Zdeno Chara and Slovakia by a score of 5-3—sending them to a game tomorrow against Team USA. Latvia defeated Switzerland by a score of 3-1 and will face the defending gold medalists in Team Canada.
Captain Pavel Datsyuk and team Russia shutout Norway by a score of 4-0 with huge play from Alexander Radulov, who notched two goals in the shutout. They are going to face the goaltending depth that has performed as expected in Team Finland.
And, finally, Anze Kopitar and Slovenia sent Austria packing, defeating them 4-0.
